Soulbreach: My dividing line

21/02/07  ||  Lord K Philipson

Sweden’s Soulbreach… I got a demo from them when we played a gig with God Among Insects in Västerås, Sweden, some year ago. I kinda dug some of that CDR. Obviously they got themselves a record deal out of it, congratulations.

Let me start off with this: I liked the demo better. It might be becoz this music is simply served better in small doses. The 3 demo tunes are on this album though (ofcourse), so I guess that’s a bonus.

Soulbreach likes Meshuggah, but even if it’s not something they wanna show all the time, they definitely make sure to include enough stolen beats and ideas from them. It feels a bit more like a small tribute to said band than a rip-off, which is nice for a change. And to say that vocalist Daniel doesn’t remind you of Meshuggah’s Jens would be a downright lie. He sure does at times.

I have a hard time fully getting into bands like this since the world is pretty much crowded with them for some sad reason. Soulbreach is a little different though. They don’t use the mandatory clean vocal chorus thing, which is something I applaud. Soulbreach plays their shit a little heavier. The In Flames melodies are there as well as obvious At The Gates influences with some Pantera riffs on top, not to forget the Meshuggah rhythms here and there. It works, not more, not less.

5,5/10.
